American Farmland Trust has received a grant from the San Francisco Foundation to conduct a feasibility study of the potential of the City of San Francisco to feed itself well and healthily with a minimal impact on the local, regional and global environment by increasing the share of its food consumption produced by sustainable farming methods within the Bay Area itself and the immediately surrounding agricultural areas, including the 15 counties within 100 miles of the Golden Gate.
The study will examine the current amount and sources of food consumed in the city; the potential of the surrounding area to supply additional high-quality, healthy food to the city; current and possible systems for encouraging the production and purchase of more local food by people and institutions, and for assuring that low income consumers can afford it; and the potential conservation of natural resources and energy from greater local food consumption and production.

This Op-Ed from the Sunday March 31 New York Times goes into some detail about the far reaching effects of expanding pesticide use in Mexico, Central and South America. As more and more of our food is coming from these countries, their overall (and largely unregulated) pesticide use is exponentially expanding. This overuse of highly toxic chemicals is coming back to us not only in our food - but also in our migratory songbirds.
Songbird populations are showing heavy exposure, and heavy declines. If you appreciate biological diversity - and love swallows (as I do) - you might want to consider buying US grown, locally grown or organically grown foods.

2007 ROC Planning Fellow Larry Bain wrote this letter to the editor in response to Kim Severson's article "Some Good News on Food Prices" in yesterdays New York Times Food Section. Severson's article argues that the rising costs of food might be a driving force to get people to eat local - Larry Bain raises some issue with her argument -
For another response to this see "Why Michael Pollan and Alice Waters Should Quit Celebrating Food-Price Hikes".
Dear Editor
Kim Severson's piece nicely presented the potential upsides to the food crisis we are facing spurred, in part, by the dramatic increases in the cost of wheat, corn, rice and every other crop that requires fuel or water to grow, process and distribute.

You will find AG’s eloquent request that the State Board of Food and Agriculture to undertake a strategic visioning process that will prepare California for what he calls the “unpredictable future,” attached below.
