A Letter of Welcome from Stewardship Council Co-Chair Pietro Parravano
February 4, 2008

The Roots of Change is made up of three dynamic components - Stewardship Council, Leadership Network, and Coordinating Team - that individually and collectively are critical for its success. Clearly the most important of the three components is the Leadership Network.  The Leadership Network provides the hearts, minds and hands that are necessary to make real change on the ground—in communities, on land and at sea, in the marketplace, in government agencies, and amongst consumers like you and I. As a member of the Leadership Network, your integrity, drive, expertise, and connections to people, resources and institutions will spur the desired changes.

The Stewardship Council is a group of experienced leaders. You might call them advisors who are meant to be a source of wisdom and a more detached objectivity, and who have experience in the food system network. The responsibility of the Council is to foster the emergence of the Leadership Network; guide and implement transformative changes in food systems; and to help secure the resources that will be invested in our campaign.

Currently the Council has seventeen members that hail from diverse backgrounds, and reflect various components of a food system. Each one of us is passionate about creating a food system based on wholesome values and principles of sustainability. By 2009, we hope to have 21 members reflecting nonpartisan consensus and commitment to a sustainable food system. Please click here to view a current roster of the Stewardship Council.

The Coordinating Team is composed of our fine staff and consultants tasked to coordinate the work of the two previously described bodies. Undoubtedly, you have met one or more of these hard working team members because they are the primary point of contact with Roots of Change. They are currently focused on three things: 1) growing the Leadership Network; 2) attracting funds and other resources to fuel your work; 3) forming workgroups that will focus on fulfilling Campaign objectives in efficient and effective ways.

Together the Leadership Network, Stewardship Council and Coordinating Team make up what we like to call the Roots of Change Community. The structure provides a powerful network committed to unifying at the grass tops and grass roots the different parts of the entire food system, including policymakers, entrepreneurs, regulators, consumers, workers, ranchers, farmers and fishermen.

On behalf of the Stewardship Council, I welcome you to the Leadership Network and thank you for who you are, for your passion, creativity and commitment and for all that we will share in the years ahead. It will be exciting and fulfilling, I am sure. Together we will make a difference.
