Funding Priorities

Roots of Change is currently funding four collaborative projects that resulted from our 2008 class of Fellows. During the  Fellowship, each Workgroup developed a project plan for the period 2009-2012, for implementation with their Workgroup members. The four Workgroups focused on the following goals:
  • Labor: Creation of a Worker-Owned Farm Labor Hiring/Recruitment System as an ethical alternative to farm labor contractors, offering improved living and working conditions for farmworkers and benefits for farmers.
  • Regional Food Systems: Creation of a Bundled CSA model that takes the CSA concept to scale via bundling produce from multiple farms and delivering directly to the consumer.
  • Health and Good Food Access: Creation of healthy, self-sustaining communities by supporting school food environments
  • Outreach to Conventional Agriculture: Creation of stronger relationships between Agriculture and the Food Movement by arranging a series of small dinner conversations throughout the state's key agricultural regions.

What is the Changemakers Network?

boy_with_corn.jpg Movement toward a sustainable food system is underway. Many individuals, organizations, businesses, and agencies are already working to change the current system.

The Changemakers Network is a statewide coalition that combines all these individual efforts into a common framework in order to maximize impacts that will spur system-wide change.

Everyone in the food system is welcome to join the Changemakers Network. Whether you’re a business owner, the head of a school nutrition program, a dairy operator, or an enthusiastic eater – your leadership is needed to create a sustainable food system for California in one generation.

ROC Fellows
Who are the Roots of Change Fellows?

Fellows get to work in the CLBL farm house.
Chosen through an open application process, the ROC Fellows are a diverse group of CA food system leaders working together to develop strategies to create a sustainable food system for CA by 2030. Each class of ROC fellows is  selected to reflect a level of diversity and experience representative of the current CA food system. The fellows are chosen based on a wide variety of considerations including: their role in food system, leadership experience, project/business experience, connections to extended CA networks, and diversity of age, race, and geographic location to reflect the state’s overall diversity.
